IMG 2385Ian Chandler from the Pressure Group facilitated the first two days of the ‘Advocacy & campaign strategies to counter climate change: Training on how to influence national governments’for Southern Voices on Climate Change participants in Warsaw from the 7-9 November, 2013

In his presentation, Ian provided an overview of the steps needed to create an effective advocacy campaign, and common mistakes to avoid. The workshop was a mix of plenary sessions and group work. Around 25 Southern participants were kept busy and engaged in trying out the different tools.

The discussion on how to develop advocacy objectives in a participatory process took its departure from a case story from Malawi. And a case from the CCWG Vietnam informed the debate on how to develop an advocacy strategy and choose between different advocacy approaches on a range between the friendly and the confrontational.

Carbonia and Tempestia for stakeholder analysis
Participants found it very engaging to identify the important stakeholders  - to promote greater transparency in climate finance in the in the coastal state of Tempestia. And to develop influencing strategies to shift subsidies for the oil-drillers in favour of promotion of renewable energy in the emerging economy of Carbonia.

For the session on the third day please see the article "Monitoring and Evaluation in Advocacy: What does success look like"

In attendance were over 30 Southern Voices partners and the training was rated very highly by workshop participants.
