Among a plethora of definitions of "adaptation", the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides the following: "Adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities".

The following brief summarises CARE's two-track approach to adaptation and explains why adapting to climate change and reducing the risk of climate change to poor and marginalized people, are equally important to achieve sustained human development.
